Marren eases Sligo past Big Apple banana skin
By SLIGO 3-21 NEW YORK 0-6 Ruaidhri O'Connor in New York
Irish Independent

THERE was no sting in this Bronx tale for Sligo, who return home from New York this evening with Galway and Roscommon on their minds.

Kevin Walsh's team won't be fooled by this big win over a game but limited side in the Connacht SFC Championship opener and the former Galway midfielder will be especially concerned by his own specialist area where Sligo struggled from kick-outs.

Walsh used the opportunity to give championship debuts to centre-back Mark Quinn, midfielder Shane McManus and centre-forward Pat Hughes and will be satisfied with their displays, while whoever Sligo's opponents are on June 9, they will need to keep tabs on their impressive full-forward line and Adrian Marren and Stephen Coen in particular.

New York started the brighter with midfielders Mike Jim Fitzgerald and Eoghan Carew on top of their sector. They couldn't make their dominance count, however, often getting caught in possession and running down blind alleys and after two early wides the men in black got going.

They had their problems in front of goal themselves and for a while it looked as if no one wanted the honour of scoring the first point of the 2012 championship, but full-forward Marren stepped up at the end of a well-worked move to get the scoring underway after nine minutes, before he added a free moments later.

New York's fine start was consigned to memory soon after when goalkeeper Alan Hearty got to Marren's pass before Coen, but spilled the ball at the feet of the corner-forward and he didn't need asking twice, beating defender Ronan McGinley with a neat finish.

Brendan Egan added a point to make it 1-3, before the hosts finally got on the scoreboard with CJ Molloy's free. That couldn't stem the tide, and although Carew continued to win ball, his team-mates couldn't make the possession count and the Sligo full-forward line began to thrive, and Marren added three points along with one from Shane McManus.

Coen and Paul McGovern added further points, but they were cancelled out by a Carew free and a superb score from Molloy, and Coen's second point left it 1-10 to 0-3 at half-time.

After an overcast opening period, the sun began to beat down over Gaelic Park and, while the crowd might have been pleased, it didn't do New York any good in terms of keeping pace with Sligo.

Manager Connie Molloy had used all his subs by the 45th minute, but at that stage their race was already run and as they wilted in the heat, Sligo began to cut loose with and turn on the style.

Although Carew sent over a free for New York, Tony Taylor and Mark Breheny (2f) kept the scoreboard ticking over. Substitute Sean Kelly pointed for the hosts, but the north-westerners then went on a run, bagging 2-8 in the last 20 minutes before Carew got a consolation score.

Alan Costello sent over a booming effort to get them up and running, before captain Ross Donovan got up for a score from corner-back.

Hughes marked his championship bow with a goal and a point, netting from the edge of the square, before Coen got his second goal to finish the job.

Bronx battering for exiles

Sligo 3-21 New York 0-06
By John Riordan

Monday, May 07, 2012

Stephen Coen and Adrian Marren inspired Sligo to a straight forward victory in the Bronx in this one-sided Connacht quarter-final yesterday.

New York started with four homegrown players and that inexperience showed as Marren went about dismantling their ambitions.

Indeed Sligo started with three championship debutants, centre-back Mark Quinn, midfielder Shane McManus and impressive centre forward Pat Hughes all lining out while veteran Eamon O’Hara was an unused sub.

Two goals from Coen and another from Hughes made the scoreline as one-sided as it looks and after the visitors recorded seven early wides, they found their stride with points from all over the park.

Marren opened the scoring after nine minutes and followed it up with a free a minute later.

In the 12th minute, his miss-kick was dropped by Armagh-born keeper Alan Hearty and the ball fell to Coen who rifled a great strike to the net with his left foot.

New York rallied and a CJ Molloy free got them off the mark but by the 20th minute, Marren had Kevin Walsh’s men 1-5 to 0-1 ahead with two more well-taken points, the second of which was assisted by Hughes who would have to wait until the second half before getting his name on the scoreboard.

As the game lost its initial intensity, Sligo kept the scores ticking over, two points from Coen book-ending a point from wing back Paul McGovern while Eoghan Carew and Molloy scored for the hosts, making it 1-10 to 0-3 at the break.

Although Carew’s free made up for a Molloy miss at the start of the second-half, New York spent most of the remainder of the game chasing shadows as a strong sun cleared the early cloud cover.

A Tony Taylor point was followed up by two frees from excellent corner forward Mark Breheny and then in the 50th minute, Alan Costello sent over a free from long distance that drew large applause from the roughly 3,000 crowd.

Even captain Ross Donavan, who had a stormer at left corner back, got in on the act while a Marren free was his final act before being substituted with six points to go with his enormous contribution in support play.

The game was long over by the time Hughes goaled brilliantly in the 63rd minute but there was still time for Coen to add his second as he skilfully rounded the keeper to slot home from 15 yards out.

Sligo now face Galway or Roscommon in the semi-final in five weeks while New York must lick their wounds and wait another year.

Scorers for Sligo: Coen 2-4; Marren 0-6, 2f; Hughes 1-1; Breheny 0-3; Donavan, McGovern, Taylor, McManus, Costello (f) Mullen and Egan all 0-1.

New York Colleges Team bring home the Shield!

posted 14 Feb 2012 14:05 by Simon Gillespie   [ updated 14 Feb 2012 14:06 ]

The New York Colleges team’s victory in the Division 2 Shield tournament will be the toast of the Minor Board’s Dinner Dance this weekend after the team produced a stunning 0-20 points to 0-06 victory over the University of Aberdeen last Sunday in  Manchester. The victory was made all the sweeter as it had been Aberdeen last year who defeated New York in a heart breaking quarter final defeat.

New York were drawn in a tough group with rivals and eventual Division 2 Finalists Liverpool John Moore’s University and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) who had qualified for the competition after demolishing some of their regional teams in the qualifying campaign.

First up for New York was LJMU in Erin Go Brath’s field in Holly Lane, Birmingham New York enjoyed a great opening spell with Adrian Jusufi opening up New York’s scoring account with a sublime right footed effort from 30 yards. New York continued to pile on the pressure with Liam Deane winning a free on the left hand side of the field which CJ Molloy duly dispatched. The momentum of the game then swung in favor of the Moore’s boys but they were unable to convert their scores dropping several high balls into Kevin Mc Ardle’s hands. LJMU’s first score came in the seventh minute with a fisted effort after sloppy defending from New York. Indiscipline was costing both teams and several players found their way into the referee’s notebook, earning yellow cards. CJ then tagged over another free before great work from Shane Hanley and Shane Hogan allowed Liam Deane to fist home a goal for the Yanks. New York dominated the opening exchanges and Full Forward CJ Molloy scoring another point from play in the 12th minute which saw NY ahead 1-04 to 0-01 at the break.

Six points up and New York looked to be cruising home towards a memorable victory over John Moore’s but a series of costly errors and poor tackling allowed Liverpool back into the game. Indeed New York didn’t score in the second half with Liverpool tagging points in the second and fourth minute; Liverpool also bagged a goal in the sixth minute to put a point between the teams. Liverpool tied the game up in the seventh minute with a point from another free. Four New York players found themselves booked in the second half as the New Yorkers became increasingly frustrated with the game. Liverpool had several chances to go on and win the game but with 14 minutes and 30 seconds on the clock CJ Molloy won a free 40 yards out to win the game after great work from Conor Hogan and Sean Reilly. With the last kick of the game CJ clipped the outside of post to tie the game 1-04 each.

New York had little time for recovery and within ten minutes was up again against the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN). UCLAN scored right from the throw up and it looked as if New York heads were still in the previous game. UCLAN scored again within the minute and only for a superb stop from veteran goalkeeper Kevin Mc Ardle New York would have lost the game within the first 3 minutes. Inspired by the save the New York defense broke out and Del Ferreira netted a fantastic goal into the bottom left corner of the net to turn the momentum of the game. From the resulting kick out New York played the ball into CJ Molloy who won a penalty on the edge of the large square which Sean Reilly slotted home to leave the scores 2-00 to 0-02. UCLAN scored a free in the 9th minute to put a goal between the sides but Brian Givney hard work around the middle of the field allowed Conor Hogan to set up CJ Molloy for a point from the edge of the square to put some breathing space between the teams. New York was unlucky to be denied a goal for what appeared to be a square ball but indiscipline in the New York defense again cost the team with UCLAN getting a score late in the half to leave New York a goal up at the half.

UCLAN came right back into the game in the second half and it seemed as though New York were set to implode again with victory in their grasp as UCLAN hit 4 unanswered points to leave New York a point down with 2 minutes left on the clock but CJ Molloy hit 2 frees at the death to win the game for New York by a point. John Moore’s 2 point win over UCLAN in the following game was enough to put New York into the B section of the competition. New York was drawn against the University of Liverpool and Newcastle University but a heavy overnight frost left the fields frozen the following day. New York as the highest placed second teams were then drawn in the Division 2 Shield Final against old rivals the University of Aberdeen with the game to take place in Manchester.

New York began the Shield Final at blistering pace with Donnacha Dwyer winning the throw in and playing the ball into Liam Deane who slotted over from 25 yards. Dwyer’s performances throughout the tournament have showed why many people are looking to him as a future New York Senior Footballer displaying an array of talents in playmaking, scoring and tackling. New York scored 12 points in the first half of the shield final with huge performances from Kevin Daly, Adrian Jusufi, Brian Twomey and Frankie Mc Dermott. Twomey volleyed over a breaking ball on the edge of the square in the second minute and added three more points over the course of the 60 minutes. Brian Givney was causing Aberdeen all sorts of headaches winning several balls around the middle of the field and was unlucky to be denied a goal in the 17th minute.  New York went in at the break 12 points to 1 up.

New York never let up in the second half and tagged on several scores with some fine points from Tom O’Brein and Kevin Daly. Sean Reilly scored a ‘45 five minutes into the second half and New York cruised through the last 15 minutes of the game. Aberdeen never gave up and tagged some fine scores to make the score 0-20 points to 0-06 after 60 minutes. Scotland GDA and tournament coordinator Ronan Mc Carthy paid tribute to both teams when presenting the Shield to New York and thanked the New York management for all their hard work in making the trip possible and for making the tournament for six successive occasions. This was New York’s first silverware in all six trips and the players and management were thrilled with the win after all the effort, training and fundraising that has gone into the team.

Leitrim retain NY SFC

posted 10 Jan 2012 08:51 by Simon Gillespie

As the players of NY Leitrim and Tyrone in contesting for the 2011 New York senior football championship left the field at Gaelic Park the Bronx yesterday afternoon, the large crowd gave the teams a standing ovation as they had just witnessed one of the greatest senior football finals in the city in years.

A fantastic game of football saw Leitrim edge out a very gallant Tyrone in the dying minutes of OT with Kerry native, Dan Doona sending over a brace of points to see the champions retain their title by [17] 0-17 to [15] 1-12.

But NY Tyrone had come oh so close to toppling the champions as they were leading by a point with virtually seconds left in normal time only to see Leitrim steal in for a late equalizer.

Here to give a full report on the final is NY GAA Secretary, Liam Bermingham, and, we also here from delighted Leitrim selector, Frankie Dwyer and NY GAA Chairman, Larry McCarthy on a thrilling final.
